Fox has ordered a fifth season of its popular hip hop drama Empire. The pickup further extends the impressive run of what is currently the network's #2 series in both overall viewers and the coveted adults 18-49 demographic.

The pickup comes as no surprise considering the show's success over the past three years. Easily Fox's biggest hit in recent history, Empire burst onto the scene in 2015 with not only strong critical acclaim, but ratings that towered over its competition. Awards show recognition followed and it quickly became a flagship for the network. While its ratings have now pulled back to levels far from what they were in its heyday, the series remains a formidable prime time player.

Co-created by Lee Daniels, Empire stars Terrence Howard as a hip hop mogul in an ever-changing power struggle with his ex-wife, played by Taraji P. Henson, for control over their family's entertainment dynasty.

Look for Season 5 to return as part of Fox's 2018-2019 lineup this fall.
