No Season 2 for the 70s-set comedy.
May 10, 2019
It is being reported that ABC has cancelled The Kids Are Alright after just one season. The move is a bit of a surprise, as the comedy was a fairly decent performer during its run.
A latecomer to the 2018-2019 season with a mid-October premiere, the sitcom got off to a solid start, ranking as one of the fall's top new comedies. Just three weeks into its run, the network ordered additional episodes to bring its total to 23 - a full season's worth. Viewership has started to taper off over the latter half the season, however.
The Kids Are Alright follows a traditional 1970s working-class Irish-Catholic family. Parents Mike and Peggy are raising eight boys who spend most of their days with little to no supervision. With a total of 10 people under one roof sharing three bedrooms and one bathroom, it ends up being everyone for themselves.

You guys suck! This was one of the best new shows that came out. Not enough sex, violence and foul language for you? You guys must be morons!

Awww, are you kidding? It took so long for one of the major networks to come out with a TRULY FUNNY comedy and ABC was finally the winner with with this one!! Hoping our comments matter & that they'll reconsider.

This show was VERY GOOD!!! I can not believe ABC canceled it so quickly!! I seriously am giving up on network TV. They keep awful reality shows filled with stupidity like The Bachelor, and cancel solid programs like this show. I hope the producers can find another home for the show, like Netflix or Amazon Prime and bring it back!

This ssssoooo reminded me of my young years growing up. It was so great to be able to relate to a show that reflected my childhood so exact. It was funny to see how it all unfolded each week. I reeeeallly hope someone else picks it up. We need to be able to laugh at things with all the sadness in our world today.

Shows aren't just canceled for ratings reasons alone. Production costs and cast commitments are also major drivers. Not saying that's what happened here - but keep in mind there are always other reasons for cancellations.

Another great family comedy CANCELED!!!! The execs at ABC must have been concerned about the lack of diversity on the show and as well as it being "TOO" religious for their agenda. I would hope this show would be picked up by FOX or maybe a cable station. Why the hell did they give the go ahead for this show when they knew they were going to cancel it after one season. Other sub-par performing shows on this network just keep getting renewed, it is simply infuriating.

I loved this comedy! Mom said it was her favorite new comedy in the 2018/2019 season next to Cool Kids which also got cancelled. I'm really surprised and saddened that this show got axed. I echo other comments on here that I hope another station picks it up! It's a great show!!

Tragic that they canceled this show -- it was one of the best family comedies shows on TV (filling a nice hole left by The Middle,) with a great cast and a fun play on the '70s throwback premise.
I wish they would have stuck with it, don't know why it didn't catch on -- the initial debut Ratings were solid (6.5m viewers and a healthy 1.4 share in the demo) but it shed more than half that in its run, so I get it, but I think it was worth fighting for (Mary McCormack was Emmy-worthy IMO) and might have had a fighting chance if they promoted it right in a second season.
