No Season 2 for the astronaut drama.

It is being reported that Netflix has cancelled Away after just one season. The sad news comes the month after the drama released its 10-episode freshman run, which ultimately drew a mixed reception from both viewers and critics.
So why did Netflix cancel Away so quickly after its premiere? According to the available data, the series garnered a fairly sizeable audience. It wasn't long after its September 4 debut that the show made it to the top spot of the streaming giant's Top 10 list. Nielsen streaming rankings also had it in its Top 10 for several weeks. But those numbers are just what the public has access to.
There was likely a more detailed set of internal data that only Netflix sees that factored into Away's early demise. Netflix is known to make renewal decisions based on cost vs. viewership, and by all accounts Away is one of the streamer's most-expensive shows of all time, so its internal targets for viewership were likely quite lofty out of the gate. The criteria for a second season go-ahead may have been much higher than what it actually obtained.
Set in the near future, the hour-long series stars Hilary Swank as American astronaut Emma Green, who leaves her husband and daughter behind to lead an elite international space crew on a perilous, years-long mission to Mars. The diverse team's extended time away from their families tests their relationships back at home as well as the new ones formed in space. Staying on track - and alive - is paramount, as their pursuit is humanity's most important goal.

This really stinks Netflix. This show was really, really good. Entertaining, intelligent, had lots of heart. I think this is a truly poor decision.

I won't pretend I'll stop watching Netflix over this. I liked the show, it combined hard science and personal stories in a way I enjoyed. Still, I am tempted to restrict my viewing of Netflix series to those that have at least 2 full seasons on tap. I've started that with Hulu and Prime.

The goal was diversity and to not have any white guys, except a russian, who is, of course, a bad guy. And to have a woman or POC to be the "good" people. The goal wasn't a good show and they succeeded because the show totally sucked

Entertaining, but felt too much like The Martian movie. The scene with the first photo from Mars was pretty brilliant, though. Swank didn't seem right for the role. Tried too hard to tick all PC boxes (black, white, asian, middle-eastern, male, female, straight, gay, mixed race couples, jewish, christian, atheist, American, Russian, Chinese, disabled, blind, married, divorced, unattached, single parent, traditional role reversal, teen rebellion...etc.). Agree with Chuck above about the science (drilling a hole through the spacecraft??).

This is why I refuse to get interested in any Netflix-produced show. They cancel things faster than Fox.

I’m not surprised! More of a chick flick than a space drama. Swank was crying every other scene about stuff back home. I’d never want my leader to do that!

Damn, I like this show. Netflix is getting as bad as the Networks when it comes to cancelling shows!!

Strange. I noticed it was the top watched show for several weeks and remained in the Top 10 for quite a while. How could it be disappointing? It can't stay in the Top 10 indefinitely when you release new content weekly.

I did not watch this, but my Mom did and really liked it. This is why I don't watch any new series. Whenever I get caught up into something new they cancel it.
