No Season 2 for the acclaimed drama.
July 2, 2021
It is being reported that HBO has cancelled Lovecraft Country after just one season. The sad news comes eight months after the supernatural horror drama wrapped its freshman outing, and comes as a bit of a surprise considering its strong performance.
The show's first season appeared to be a success for the cable network. Critics were mostly in agreement in their acclaim for the series, and ratings were solid on both linear and digital platforms. Its final episode drew 1.5 million viewers - the most of its 10-episode run - and on HBO Max the show made it to the top spot among all its other originals, with its debut episode being viewed roughly 10 million times.
The decision to end the series seemed to come down to the fact that it is based on a single book. While there were reports earlier this year that showrunner Misha Green was exploring ideas to continue the story, it looks like the cable network ultimately opted against it.
Based on Matt Ruff's novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Black, who meets up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a trip across the segregated United States in the 1950s in search of his missing father. This leads to a fight for survival and a struggle to overcome the racist terrors of white America as well as supernatural monsters that could be straight out of a Lovecraft paperback.

Yes, it definitely got preachy, was racist in both directions by the actions of the characters, but they were depicting a time where some of those things happened that way. I found that my enjoyment of the show dwindled the last two or three episodes, and I wasn't going to be watching season 2, so I got the conclusion I craved. Not a big deal for me that it was canceled. I felt the same about Fear The Walking Dead, Good Lord Bird after the third or fourth episode, and I bailed on the most recent season of Big Mouth after I couldn't get enough of it before that. Maybe the issues aren't with those shows but with me. Who knows. Give me American Gods or Umbrella Academy instead any day.

I watched the first two episodes, but there was just too much hate against white people.

Solid show. A little slow but very well done. Excellent ending. Probably a good idea to leave well enough alone.

I did enjoy it and would have liked a new season but if it was based on only one book and couldn't come up with a solid second season. I'm at least glad it ended well. Better not to ruin it with a poor second season just to have something. And for all the racists comments on here. I don't care what color as long as I'm entertained

That's a shame. I thoroughly enjoyed the first season.

Anything with a Smollett in it I won't watch. That entire family is screwed up in the head.

That's too bad but at least they didn't force a second season just for it to turn out crap like so many shows do.

It drags at a couple of points but this was a really fantastic show overall. Really strong performances and disturbing moments. That said, I don’t know if the show needed a season 2. The finale felt like a pretty solid conclusion. Plus wasn’t there only one book? HBO forced a second season out of Big Little Lies and I’d argue it didn’t work very well. So this might be for the best. I’ll happily rewatch the episodes we have and I hope the people involved in the show continue to find work.
