The medical drama will conclude its run this year.
January 11, 2024
ABC announced today that The Good Doctor will be ending after its upcoming seventh season. The news comes a month before the medical drama returns for its now final run on February 20.
The series has been an important part of the network's lineup since its premiere in 2017 became one of the breakout freshman entries of that season. A Monday night staple, it ranked as the top entertainment series in the 10pm time slot last season among adults 18-49. The show will be moving to Tuesday nights for the first time for its final season.
"Thanks to David Shore and Liz Friedman's creative direction and anchored by Freddie Highmore's performance, The Good Doctor has captivated audiences, who have deeply connected with Dr. Shaun Murphy and the staff at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital," said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. "As we prepare to finish this beloved story, words cannot express our gratitude for the incredible cast, crew and our partners at Sony and ABC Signature for the lasting impact they've made."
"Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life," said Highmore. "I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home. With love from Vancouver... tequila, stat!"
The series follows Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who leaves his quiet country life behind to join the surgical unit at a renowned hospital in San Jose, California. Alone in his new surroundings and not able to form a personal connection with his peers, Dr. Murphy puts his extraordinary medical gifts to use in order to save lives and challenge his skeptical colleagues.

This was a very good show. I'm glad it's going out before it loses it's charm and starts to feel like a chore to watch. (i.e. Grey's Anatomy)

Hopefully David Shore will be releasing a new medical tv show soon, or maybe we'll finally get the "The Good Lawyer" show

I think it’s a huge loss to television to end the series that portrays a successful autistic adult. The Good Doctor is exactly what TV needs, more than ever. It feels like a blow to a community that needs representation now more than ever. They’ll end this, but Grey’s Anatomy continues on? It sends a very clear message of where ABC’s priorities are. They have the opportunity to impact change and are instead turning their backs on it. Typical Disney.

"A Monday night staple, it ranked as the top entertainment series in the 10pm time slot last season among adults 18-49." If that's true, then WHY is ABC canceling this great show??? Honestly, they leave stupid stuff on like the Bachelor but cancel a terrific, heartfelt, teachable moments show like this one? I have learned a lot from this show--about the medical field and about autism!! What the hell ABC?? You guys have really screwed up canceling an awesome show such as this! What are you going to replace it with, another stupid "reality" show? This was the best medical show on TV!! Thanks for blowing it (again) ABC!!!

One of the very few doctor type shows I like. Sad to see it go. :(
