The legal drama will return for a second season.
October 22, 2024
CBS announced today that Matlock has been renewed for Season 2. The early pickup comes just two episodes into the legal drama's freshman run. Since its September premiere, the show has garnered high praise from both critics and viewers alike.
"This reconceived Matlock was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates," said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. "The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can't wait to get started on a second season."
Inspired by the classic television series of the same name, the series follows brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock, who has rejoined the workforce after achieving success in her younger years. At her new prestigious law firm, she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within.

I agree with Steve. An enjoyable show, almost the same character from Harry's Law, with a twist. I too thought the story-line would be a one season run, also given she has said she will retire after this. Depending on how long the season will be, 10, 13 or more episodes, will tell how much they can milk her backstory investigation into the firm. Of course, Beau Bridges character can die and leave everything hanging and change the way the investigation move, and/or it will extend outside the firm and the buildup to and the eventual lawsuit and trial once she uncovers the "truth". That could take it to season 3.

I give it credit for not being a simple copy of the original Matlock but a knowing twist on everything that made the original a staple for seniors. Kathy Bates is clearly having a lot of fun.
But where are they going to take it after the original storyline is settled? There are three likable characters at the law firm, at least one of whom is apparently responsible for the death of "Matlock's" daughter. They can only string this story out for so long. And then what? Does "Matlock" continue at the law firm? Doing what?
So I am a bit surprised by the early renewal. We just don't know where the series is going and I wonder if the producers do either.

Gender swap another failure.

So Help Me Todd, Seal Team, Swat, Blue Bloods, Evil, etc. All these shows are better than Matlock. All canned by Amy What's Her Name. I finally looked her up online. She looks like white America circa mid 1950s. This is who is programming CBS. She probably hated reversing her decision on Swat, but someone had to tell her the network needs positive non-white characters. Amy thinks we are morons that do not know how to change the channel.

Haven’t had the chance to see it yet, but it’s been getting great buzz online and from the people I know personally that have watched it. I love Kathy Bates, so I’m stoked to see her get a successful starring vehicle.

I started watching this and so far think it’s pretty entertaining even though I’m still mad about So Help Me Todd being canceled to make room for it!

Calling this show, and the main character, Matlock is a total bait-n-switch.
Bates' character is just called Matlock, but is in no way related to the original Matlock.
This is Holleywood doing a gender swap and then totally disrespecting the original IP. What a joke.
