Maggie Sullivan is a top Boston neurosurgeon whose personal and professional life are turned upside down after her business partner is indicted for fraud and she is charged with negligence.

Deciding to leave the city, Maggie returns home to Sullivan's Crossing in Nova Scotia, where she must navigate her complicated present while confronting the painful past she has ignored for years.

When Maggie meets a mysterious stranger there, the two initially butt heads until he starts to grow on her, which only complicates things as she must choose between moving back to Boston and a life in Sullivan's Crossing.
