The new anthology series is given an early pickup.
April 20, 2017
As part of its upfront slate, National Geographic Channel has announced that its new scripted anthology series Genius will be returning for Season 2. The news comes ahead of the drama's premiere next week on April 25.
The first season of Genius will chronicle the life of brilliant physicist Albert Einstein, going beyond his well-known accomplishments to explore his humble origins as an imaginative thinker, his desire to be recognized by the establishment, and his struggle to be a good husband and father while upholding his principles during a time of global unrest.
The subject of the anthology series' second season will be announced on June 20 during its first-season finale.

Personally, I think Genius is a wonderful show, tho the truth is sorely lacking in the Albert Einstein story. His first child did not die, she was raised by her maternal grandparents and Albert and Mileva went on with their lives as if the child never existed. In the series it shows the child died. Beyond that, the show has been incredible thus far. I cant wait to see what is in store for next season...

I can't say for sure about Nat Geo but the increase in early renewals overall can be credited to the possible upcoming writer's strike. The networks are storing up new programs to air, just in case.

Nat Geo has a lot a mediocre programming - which seems bad at first thought - but that's no different than every other channel. One has to sample what sounds good when they get a heads up, and every so often you get rewarded. I would bail real quickly on this one as my demands for anything Einstein are very high.

This is a catch 22:
Renewal before a premiere means that it might not do good and the network wants to please the people that are afraid to watch a show if it might get canned. This is a sign that the networks thinks the show might not be worth watching.
Catch 22: Without it some people will be afraid to watch it. With it some people will be smart enough not to.
