AMC announced today that The Walking Dead has been renewed for a tenth season. The good news comes as the hit series is gearing up for its return from its winter break this Sunday.

The post-apocalyptic zombie drama continues to rank as one of television's top scripted series, though some plot elements in recent seasons have resulted in a considerable drop in its audience numbers compared to the highs it reached a few years ago. Viewership in the current season is again hitting series lows, though it has leveled off and is now fairly consistent week-to-week.

Season 9 is the first with new showrunner Angela Kang, who took over for Scott M. Gimple and helped usher in a new era for the veteran series, which has recently lost some of its major characters. The back half of the current season promises to feature more of The Whisperers, who were introduced in late 2018.

Look for Season 10 of The Walking Dead this October.
