The long-running sitcom lands another two-season order.
February 6, 2019
FOX announced another multi-year pickup for The Simpsons today, renewing the veteran sitcom for Seasons 31 and 32. The animated comedy is already the longest-running scripted series on prime time television, and today's news further extends its already-impressive record.
Today's two-season order will take The Simpsons to over 700 episodes by the end of Season 32 in 2021. Since its last pickup, the show has surpassed Gunsmoke's count of 635 episodes to hold another record of having the largest number of episodes for any scripted TV series in history. The impressive feat adds yet another entry in the show's growing list of accomplishments that will quite possibly never be surpassed. And with the Sunday night staple continuing to pull in healthy ratings, there are no indications that its run will stop at 32 seasons.
On the air since 1989, The Simpsons franchise is truly is juggernaut in so many ways. The series boasts generations of loyal fans, has won scores of awards - including over 30 Emmys, has countless types of merchandise, video games, and even a hit movie. As far as critical praise, it has received top recognition from numerous outlets, including being named the greatest TV show ever in the 2016 book "TV (The Book)" and Best Show of the 20th Century by Time Magazine.

I’ve seen every episode. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t watch this show. This season is good and reminds me of some of the best episodes from previous seasons.

I have a theory of why this show keeps getting renewed: it makes FOX lots of money compared to live-action scripted shows both in advertising revenue and sales of licensed merchandise. In my humble opinion, for the networks it's not really about the ratings but about how much money they can make. "The Simpsons" should call it quits after the 2020 presidential election.

I can't believe it's gone on this long. I quit watching it years ago but obviously it still has a large fan-base. Impressive.

It stopped being a cultural meme a long time ago, and the quality of the shows overall has gone done. But I still look at each episode every week because every once in awhile it still delivers.
It's like the "Treehouse of Horror" episodes. They ran out of A-list material to parody years ago but they gamely go on and sometimes they score a hit.
Gahhhh!

Wow 32 seasons?? True confession - I have never seen an entire episode. Only saw a bit of the one where the baby spoke and that was what, 30 seasons ago??!! Guess the show has lots of fans to be on air that long.

This is The Walking Dead. Someone needs to give it "mercy" and put it out of its misery. I agree Raylan125 -- it stopped being funny a long time ago. Now it is like a soap opera of the adventures of the Simpsons, sometimes with jokes.
