No Season 3 for the Marvel drama.
April 17, 2019
Word is out this evening that Fox has cancelled The Gifted after two seasons. The mutant drama, which concluded its sophomore run earlier this year, is the latest Marvel-based series to get the axe.
The show premiered in 2017 and had a fairly strong debut outing. Reviews were generally positive and ratings were solid enough for it to rank as the #3 new drama of that season. And while critical reception remained strong in Season 2, ratings did slip considerably compared to what it brought in for Season 1. Combine that with the fact that Marvel-based fare has been dropping like flies in recent months, and today's cancellation did not come as a complete surprise.
Set in Marvel's X-Men universe, The Gifted follows a family who learns that their kids possess mutant powers. And though the father is a district attorney, he is forced to take his family on the run from a hostile government and join up with an underground network of mutants in a fight to survive.

You mean to tell me we are not going to get season 3 and 4 with all the "E" & "N" emphasized episode names like season 1 and 2 being "X" & "M" so it would spell out X-MEN pmsl. Oh well.

What's funny is, being too complicated and changing character motivations making no sense? It sounds exactly like the X-Men comics. So they at least got that part right.

This show was too complex and wandered all over the place. Character motivation changed at random. I stuck through the first season mainly because of Amy Acker, but this won't be one of her more memorable roles.

As @Angelus said near the beginning of the comments, the Disney/Fox merger has put an end to the current iteration of all mutant related material. Dark Phoenix will be the last property officially to be released before the door closes on the Fox saga of mutants. There is a New Mutants movie that has been pushed back now for two years and still does not have an official release date. Rumors are that it will be released straight to DVD or Hulu or shelved indefinitely, which is sad.
Regardless, I was glad The Gifted storyline got completed in the final episode of Season 3. For me, it was a satisfying conclusion. As for that final “twist” that could have been the next storyline for a 3rd Season, think XMEN: Days of Future Past at the beginning with an apocalyptic future and that’s probably the direction where the next season would have gone.
Nevertheless, Disney will most likely reboot the mutants in some fashion but it will be awhile. I would assume they will have a show on Disney+ by the end of 2020.
And as for Fox, I assume now that any sci fi, fantasy, or superhero show will be cancelled on their network within 2 seasons, which makes it easier to enjoy what I watch there. 99% of those types of shows end before ever reaching Season 3 on their network...

I am definitely extremely disappointed this is getting canceled. This is one of my favorite shows I was looking forward to the 3rd season. I hope some how Netflix will pick it up and continue the story line like they did with Lucifer.

Childish and not interesting.

I'm surprised and very disappointed that The Gifted was cancelled. I really liked this show! Why is it that all the good shows get cancelled by the networks?? Hopefully another network will pick it up--maybe CW since they have a lot of superhero and fantasy shows already? Hopefully it'll happen! :)

Cloak and dagger is a decent show. Disney owns freeform, so that may shield it from the ax.

I lost track of this show and need to catch up. I had some hope after the announcement of the merger between FOX and Disney. Unfortunately fell victim to the "Sophomore Slump." However, we knew a lot of FOX cancellations were coming to make room for football and WWE SmackDown (which doesn't have a season) in the schedule. I hope Cloak & Dagger will get a fair shot -- Freeform is owned by Disney, new owner of Marvel after all.

Jak Viceroy & @101, I agree completely.
... and no, it was not a cliff-hanger.
