CBS has ordered a shortened final run.
May 15, 2019
CBS announced today that Madam Secretary will be coming to an end after its upcoming sixth season. The news comes a week after the veteran political drama was picked up for the 2019-2020 season.
The network has ordered 10 episodes for the show's final run, which is by far its shortest to-date. The advanced notice beats an abrupt cancellation, and gives showrunners the chance to prepare a suitable end to the story.
The political drama, which stars Téa Leoni as the Secretary of State, has seen its ratings decline considerably the past few years but has remained a Sunday night staple nevertheless. The series surpassed the 100-episode milestone earlier this season.
Look for the sixth and final season of Madam Secretary to premiere this fall as part of the 2019-2020 television season.

Ha! They said they wanted to end it properly, and I've been waiting for an episode that seemed like an end, and there hasn't been one. They failed to end it properly. Not cool! I just checked here just now to see if I should keep watching for it to start again to finally end it, and this says there are no more episodes. Guess they didn't end it, they just quit and lied to us. Highly upset that this wonderful and intelligently written show is gone. I looked forward to it every single week and planned around it. Now we're left with the mindless drivel that I wouldn't be caught dead watching. CBS failed us....as usual.

Just gutted that they're ending this intelligent, current and insightful show! It's so beautifully acted and written that the characters have become people to care about, especially Elizabeth McCord and family. They will be sorely missed. The only clue I had that it was ending was the very abrupt morph into Madam President! That sent me here to confirm my fear. I'm grateful they allowed the wrap up but it's never going to be enough time, in ten mere episodes to say goodbye to these friends. It just figures that one of the only really great, currently relevant and really moving show with such a wonderful strong female lead would be cancelled, while insipid trash remains... I only hope that we're given the opportunity to have Tea Leoni as a welcome guest in our homes each week for many more years to come. Whether she is Madam President or not, she'll always be welcome in our home! Best wishes to the ENTIRE cast and crew for a soft landing on another great show. Farewell to our FIRST female president ( that was really believable) and the most realistic representation of Secretary of state we've had till now. Thanks for the glimpse into what really happens behind the scenes in our government, when it works! May life soon imitate art, for the sake of us all.

I will miss the cast and show so much. Love the characters and had hoped it would not be cancelled - but figured they would find a reason to cancel it. I don't believe the reason. So sorry but glad it will be on for a last "goodbye" season for faithful fans. Guess it will be time to get back to the good books that, hopefully, will never be "cancelled"!

Disappointed that it's ending, as I have enjoyed every season and appreciated how it addressed the current political climate... Very grateful that it has enough episodes to wind up properly and lead in to Madam President!

So sorry for it to end. Such an intelligent and entertaining TV show versus so many of the insipid ones that seem to air many more seasons.

I've watched and enjoyed the show, up until the last couple of seasons (which I still watched but no longer enjoyed). I actually hoped the show would be cancelled, but I suppose I can endure 10 more episodes.
I'd be happy if the show concentrated on what/how the Secretary's children do/work-out for the last 10 episodes, with the 2 parents retiring at this point in their lives.

My prediction is that CBS will bring this show back as Madam President BUT it will be on CBS All Access only, just like they did with Good Wife/Fight and Star Trek, so they can nickle and dime you every month. They figure you don't already pay enough for your cable or satellite TV or whatever you have. You read it here first.

This show got increasingly strident and political its last year, abandoning any pretense of a thoughtful drama about the issues and instead making gratuitous comments on the current political situation. It's almost as though the producers knew they were on the bubble and decided they might as well use the show as a way of expressing their own views.
With the events at the end of the season I wondered about where the show was going, and it's clear now that the producers knew chances of cancellation were large.
Still, there was a lot of good work over the years.

It should end. It's time for a spin-off. Madam President. That would be great.

I am extremely grateful they are giving it 10 episodes to wrap up the show. Way to many shows don't have that!
I like this show, sorry to see it go, I never found it preachy or anything, I guess because I enjoyed the characters and those who acted them.
Thanks for the chance to close it properly without ending it where it did. - Now lets hope they do end it properly!! Madam President!!!!!
