A year after renewing Lucifer for a fifth and final season, Netflix has opted to extend the drama's run a little further. The streaming giant made an unexpected announcement this morning that the series will be returning for Season 6, this time billing it as "FINAL final."

The move, which comes two months ahead of the release of Season 5's first eight episodes, marks the second pickup of the series by Netflix after reviving it in 2018 after its cancellation by original network Fox. The reasons behind the extra season are unknown, but will surely be a welcome surprise for the show's dedicated fanbase.

Based on a character from DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, the hour-long series follows Lucifer Morningstar, who has retired to Los Angeles from his duties as The Devil to indulge in a more carefree lifestyle. That is, until, he finds a new purpose in life and starts working alongside a homicide detective to solve crime and dispense justice.
