The drama gets an unexpected extra batch of episodes.
June 23, 2020
A year after renewing Lucifer for a fifth and final season, Netflix has opted to extend the drama's run a little further. The streaming giant made an unexpected announcement this morning that the series will be returning for Season 6, this time billing it as "FINAL final."
The move, which comes two months ahead of the release of Season 5's first eight episodes, marks the second pickup of the series by Netflix after reviving it in 2018 after its cancellation by original network Fox. The reasons behind the extra season are unknown, but will surely be a welcome surprise for the show's dedicated fanbase.
Based on a character from DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, the hour-long series follows Lucifer Morningstar, who has retired to Los Angeles from his duties as The Devil to indulge in a more carefree lifestyle. That is, until, he finds a new purpose in life and starts working alongside a homicide detective to solve crime and dispense justice.

They should have concluded it after season 3. It just got too much and it's not believeble anymore that Chloe will be into a guy like Lucifer...

After seeing the season 5 finale - great ending!!! I wonder how they can add an extra season to this.
But I'll certainly watch it!

Will be hard to see a switch to the main character on this final stretch. These were a few who could pull it off but Ian Somerhalder who played the more mischievous vampire would be my Vamp diaries guess.

I hear on Google that Tom Ellis is not going to be Lucifer anymore for the Sixth season that his character is going to be played by some Vampire Diaries person. Boooooo!!!!!

I suspect that Jason is correct. The first half of season 5 was probably already completed when the pandemic halted production. Netflix is going to go ahead and call that a VERY short season 5 and run the second half next year as season 6.
As for Khelben's comment, the season 4 finale could have been a satisfactory ending to the series, so we'll have to see how the writers did with continuing to series 5.

Now is it an actual season or just a 2nd half of a fifth season being cut short due to the pandemic?

I wouldn't be shocked to if that's the case at all.

Yeah… I love this show, but I'm not sure this is a good idea when the writers already gave the show an ending with season 5…
