The prequel series scores an early pickup for Season 2.

Starz announced today that Power Book III: Raising Kanan has been renewed for Season 2. The good news comes less than a week before the prequel series premieres on the cable network.
Set in the 1990s, the show follows fifteen-year-old Kanan Stark, who lives in Jamaica, Queens and is an intelligent and driven young man. His world revolves around his mother, who is a cocaine distributor with a network of dealers around the city. She doesn't want her son to follow in her footsteps, but Kanan wants to be just like his mom. He's naive and doesn't understand how the hustle works, which makes their relationship more complicated over time.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres on Sunday, July 18 at 8:00pm. Season 2 will likely return in mid 2022.

I think the producers of this show would be better served coming up with a new concept rather than doing prequels and sequels to a successful show.
Frankly the reason I liked Power was based on the dynamic between the main characters but the most interesting thing was really Ghost, an atypical gangster caught between the life he had as the "biggest goddamn drug dealer in New York" and wanting to live a different life with his first love as a clean and successful legitimate businessman.
Now we have sequels centered around Kanan aka mr. "I will fuck over everyone to win" and Ghost's "I hate my dad cause he stuck around and gave me too comfortable a life" son. And 2 other sequels centered around Rashad Tate and Tommy.
I think the team behind these shows thinks that just because a character was interesting in Power they can just spin it off into another successful show. This is very far from the truth, there has to be something that makes you like the main character and empathize with their struggles.
I just don't see that happening for Kanan, Tariq, sleazy politician Rashad Tate or even Tommy for that matter (unless they dramatically change him in his sequel).

Tucker…I totally agree. Maybe they should air a few episodes before renewing. It may be a total dud. I love the original, but haven’t been too impressed with the spin-off.

... hasn't even aired yet.
They sure are beating the whole "Power" thing to death...
I'm waiting for "Power Book VX: Mesopotamia" (Where you get to see Ghost's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather deal in underground mead trafficking.)
