ABC announced today that American Idol has been renewed for its eighth season on the network - and what will be its 23rd season overall. The news comes a week ahead of next Sunday's live 3-hour finale, which will crown the show's latest singing champion.

The competition series has been a reliable performer for the network since being revived. It was in 2018 that ABC brought American Idol back as a mid-season entry just one year after it was cancelled by its original network, Fox. While the show's ratings aren't what they were during the height of its popularity years ago, the revived edition still draws a respectable audience.

Next season will see the show's first judging change since it moved to ABC. Katy Perry will be leaving at the end of this season, but her replacement has yet to be named. Judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest, will all be back when Idol returns for the 2024-2025 season.
