ABC announced today that American Idol has been renewed for a ninth season on the network - and what will be its 24th season overall. The news comes a week ahead of next Sunday's live finale, which will crown the show's latest singing champion.

The competition series has been a reliable performer for the network since being revived. It was in 2018 that ABC brought American Idol back as a mid-season entry just one year after it was cancelled by its original network, Fox. While the show's ratings aren't what they were during the height of its popularity years ago, the revived edition still draws a respectable audience.

This season saw the show's first judging change since it moved to ABC. Carrie Underwood replaced Katy Perry, who departed after seven seasons. It hasn't yet been announced if Underwood, Luke Bryan, or Lionel Richie will be back when Idol returns for the 2025-2026 season.
