The vampire spin-off will say goodbye next summer.
July 20, 2017
The endgame has been set for The Originals. As many had been expecting, the Vampire Diaries spin-off will be concluding its run after its upcoming fifth season. The announcement was made today by creator Julie Plec, who broke the news on Twitter with a goodbye message to the show's fans.
While never the breakout hit that its predecessor once was, The Originals has been able to draw a consistent level of viewership over the course of its run as a companion to The Vampire Diaries. But with the flagship series signing off earlier this year, it became more apparent that The Originals was nearing the end of its time as well.
The series follows Klaus from The Vampire Diaries and his clan, who are part of the original vampire family in New Orleans. One thousand years after they pledged to always remain together, family bonds are starting to break. With the passing of time, tensions have risen and tragedy has taken its toll, with the hunger for power corrupting its members.
Look for the farewell season of The Originals in the midseason of 2017-2018.

It was sad to see a great show end, what will happen to the rest of the Mikaelson. I really really hope to see more of it .

of course the end is nigh. CW shit all over this last season by not even airing it until may and then for only 13 episodes much like Izombie. Both are great shows and deserve much better. the Originals surpassed Vampire Diaries on many levels. the last couple of season of vampire diaries were tedious and uneven at beast and a hot mess at worst. I didn't even watch the last season just turned in for the last episode and thought well why didn't they show this love for the past couple of years. Originals is better on every level and its a shame that CW (the super hero network) doesn't want to keep it. And don't hate me about the super heroes, I watch them all except Arrow.

I really enjoyed The Originals. From the time they were introduced in TVD. They were the best part of TVD. I liked Damon and Alaric (Rick) and the first couple of seasons of TVD was decent but after that annoying. The Originals was great! Season 4 was a struggle but still ok. I wish they would get better writers and move forward and keep the show running. They have a great cast with great characters just story writers that do not know how to evolve and move on.

Oh well, the end is soon. Yet there's still talk of a cartoon spin-off for kids.

I'm extremely sad to see this one go. It seems premature. Does anyone else have a problem with the fact that TVD got 8 seasons while this one is only getting 5 (despite being way better)?

It is better then the TVD by leaps and bounds but the last season jumped the shark a bit and really was hard to stay interested in.

Have watched this show since the beginning (and when characters were on TVD). While I love most of the characters, all they do is fight. Sure hope the writers write a good ending, characters ending up together and things settled in New Orleans. Please!!!
