The cop drama will return in 2026-2027.

ABC announced today that The Rookie has been picked up for a ninth season. The news comes with four episodes left in Season 8 of the police drama.
The series premiered in 2018 as a high-profile entry in the network's lineup. Headlined by Nathan Fillion, the show has consistently garnered solid ratings year in and year out. It is on track to surpass the 150-episode mark next year.
In The Rookie, Fillion plays John Nolan, a middle aged man who experiences a life-changing incident that inspires him to pursue his dream of being an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. But as the force's oldest rookie, he must deal with skepticism from senior officers and the demands of keeping up with not only the criminals, but the younger cops in the precinct.
Look for Season 9 of The Rookie as part of the 2026-2027 broadcast season.

When it started, it was a gritty, semi-realistic cop show. It is anything but now. It's turned into a ridiculous snark fest. Shocked that it still gets renewed. The big three are desperate for shows that a few people still watch, I guess.

I really hope they wrap up the serial killer storyline at the end of the current season.

Cool but I am a little surprised. The first 3 seasons were the best. Slightly above average since then.

Wonderful! I love this show -- the characters, the storylines and the great cast. Over the years they have really built up all the characters with interesting personal stories and past experiences. One of the best shows on TV. And it doesn't hurt that Nathan Fillion is the star. LOL

I like this show, but, when, they are sitting, being interviewed, I don’t. Season 8, episode 15 is called Survive the streets. Should be called Survive this episode. Think this is the second one this season like this.

Season 8 is not good. It's turned into a stupid comedy act. If they continue that type of writing in Season 9, I'm going to pull the plug on it.

Love this show - but haven’t seen it for sometime. The owner of the local ABC station in Reno has pulled all its programming off of DISH… until DISH pay them some exhorbitant amount. Really sad, holding the viewers hostage

The first couple of seasons were okay. When they brought on Jenna Dewan, whom is maybe 5ft. as a fire person, that jumped the shark for me. They turned the tough cops into wusses = planning baby showers, etc.
I stopped watching this show a long time ago. How in the world does this get renewed?

Quit watching after 3 seasons when they clearly ran out of good ideas. It was cute when he was actually an aging rookie. Now he is just aging.
