Following a fall from grace in London and spending time in rehab, the eccentric Sherlock Holmes takes residence in Manhattan, New York, where his wealthy father assigns him a "sober companion", Dr. Joan Watson, to help with his rehabilitation.
Dr. Watson was a successful surgeon until she lost a patient. However, the eccentric Holmes is nothing like her other clients. As part of a post-rehab regimen he designed himself, Holmes resumes his work as a police consultant in New York, and Watson is along for the ride.

But when I persevered, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a dramedy duet: Lucy Liu's heart-broken straight "man" complementing Miller's eccentric but troubled genius.
Comparing different Sherlock shows is just so much juggling of apples and oranges.
What matters is if the show is entertaining. And it is.
Still a good series but it destroys the immersion of a genius. He even does assumptions based on false scientific facts. Never saw that happen in the BBC show.
Nevertheless Sherlock was planned for a few episodes only. Elementary is designed to run as long as there are enough viewers and therefore it has to struggle harder to keep a believable characterisation and plot. After all its still a good show, a fresh attempt and more interesting to me than the pile of CIS and Law and Order shows we have had for ages.
To summon up, cancel that show and Moriaty will come after you!
