Hallmark Channel has announced that When Calls the Heart has been renewed for a fifth season. The veteran series is the cable channel's oldest original drama currently on the air, and still draws a healthy audience, with Season 4 garnering year-over-year ratings gains in key demographics.
Inspired by Janette Oke's book of the same name, When Calls the Heart takes place in the early 20th century and follows a young teacher from a wealthy eastern family who moves to a small western coal mining town for her first classroom assignment.
Look for Season 5 in 2018.

This show was enjoyable at first, a nice pleasant interlude on Saturday night. But it suffers from the problem of all shows built around a central romance. At some point the two main characters either have to make a commitment (i.e., get married in the era of this show) or else move on with their lives.
