CBS announced today that Magnum P.I. has been picked up for a fourth season. The good news comes with three episodes remaining in the action drama's current season, which will wrap after a shortened run of 16 episodes due to scheduling impacts related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The updated take on the '80s classic series premiered in 2018 and has become a decent performer for the network on Friday nights. The show reached the 50-episode mark last month.
Magnum P.I. follows security consultant Thomas Magnum, who works as a private investigator in Hawaii making a name for himself by taking cases nobody else will. Along with help from a team of fellow vets, Magnum utilizes his military skills to make a name for himself while on all sorts of sun-drenched adventures.

Now that the series was renewed, we'll just have to wait to see what happens with Higgins' romantic relationship.
I'm old enough to have watched the original Magnum P.I., but also old enough to not remember much about what happened in the original series (Hawaiian shirts, older Ferrari, 1911 pistol, that's about it).
The way the last season ended with Higgins owning Robin's Nest was too ridiculous. By definition a private home is a money sink; it will never show a profit as a business that will allow Higgins to stay in the US. The implausibility of this situation has been a distraction this season.
The nice twist with Higgins being a woman has added the possibility of romance between Magnum and Higgins but of course things can't get too hot too fast. So it's on again, off again with Higgins this season having a different romantic interest. In the end you wind up with the feeling that nothing much ever changes with these characters, which becomes more of an annoyance with each passing season.
