The CW announced today that Supergirl will be coming to an end after its already-ordered sixth season. The news comes eight months after the superhero drama earned its now-final pickup, which will see the show return for its farewell run in 2021.

The action drama has been a solid addition to The CW's superhero slate since its move from its original home on CBS after Season 1 in 2016. On The CW, it benefited from crossover episodes with other shows from the DC Comics universe, which consistently gave it a nice ratings bump.

Star Melissa Benoist took to Instagram after the news broke, expressing her gratitude for being able to portray the iconic character for the past five years. She also expressed excitement for the opportunity to properly plan a conclusion to the series in advance, promising fans "one helluva final season."

Today's news makes Supergirl the second series from the DC Arrowverse to be leaving the air. Arrow concluded its run earlier this year.

Look for the sixth and final season of Supergirl to premiere in 2021 as part of The CW's midseason lineup.

To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.  el mayarah  @supergirlcw
