The CW announced today that Supergirl will be coming to an end after its already-ordered sixth season. The news comes eight months after the superhero drama earned its now-final pickup, which will see the show return for its farewell run in 2021.
The action drama has been a solid addition to The CW's superhero slate since its move from its original home on CBS after Season 1 in 2016. On The CW, it benefited from crossover episodes with other shows from the DC Comics universe, which consistently gave it a nice ratings bump.
Star Melissa Benoist took to Instagram after the news broke, expressing her gratitude for being able to portray the iconic character for the past five years. She also expressed excitement for the opportunity to properly plan a conclusion to the series in advance, promising fans "one helluva final season."
Today's news makes Supergirl the second series from the DC Arrowverse to be leaving the air. Arrow concluded its run earlier this year.
Look for the sixth and final season of Supergirl to premiere in 2021 as part of The CW's midseason lineup.
