TV's longest-running drama will continue.
February 1, 2016
NBC announced today that Law & Order: SVU has been renewed for an 18th season in 2016-2017. Premiering back in 1999, television's longest-running on-air drama continues to be a solid performer for the network after an incredible seventeen years in prime time.
Along with extending SVU's run, the network also extended its relationship with producer Dick Wolf with a new 5-year deal that keeps him at NBCUniversal through 2020. Wolf has two successful franchises on the network with Law & Order as well as the Chicago series of shows both spawning multiple spin-offs.

It's not the longest running show in history. The original Law and Order ran for 20 seasons. This one would have to stay on three more seasons to beat that, and I don't think it will. I love it, but it's getting old. Wish they had kept at least one of the CSI series on!

I suspect that Mariska will be departing at the end of season 17 to make room for the new generation. But, to give a good wholesome ending to the longest running series in history, they need to bring back Belzer, Wong, Florek, and most importantly Meloni. To make it a proper send off, because you can't end this with out giving the fans gratitude for their dedication and love for the show.

This show sucks! How many times can you watch the kid get abused by the drunken father? How many times can you watch Hargitay and the rest of the cast wander off to do whatever they wants without repercussions? unrealistic drivel catering to perverts!

This show never gets old! Even as the cast changes they still do a great job captivating you. I would say Mariska Hargitay carries the show now more so then she ever did.

I know it's a good show and all, but damn.....how on, honestly, can a show go on and on and on and on and.......based on the same basic scenarios? It's a bit absurd after a while.

and yes i know there will be 4 more years of it unless it gets canceled. If it lasts through 2020 I see benson leaving after season 18 and coming back with stabler in season 20
