The procedural will reach two decades on the air.

NBC announced this evening that Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will be returning for a 20th season. The move is not a surprise, as the veteran procedural continues to be a solid performer for the network on Wednesday nights.
The pick-up continues the show's streak as the longest-running drama currently on the air. It also moves it into a tie for being the longest-running drama in television history, alongside the original Law & Order and 1950s western Gunsmoke.
Look for the Season 20 premiere of Law & Order: SVU this fall.

The Hargitay character gets more annoying every season its starting to look like the show is getting built more round her ego instead of concentrating more on the other characters who are far better actors.

I imagine a lot of people are sick of SVU , but I am happy it got renewed. It seems NBC has surprised me again. I like to have a few procedurals on the air that don't have "long arc stories" embedded in the series. That way it doesn't matter if you miss a few episodes or even just chose to watch one.
