The procedural becomes TV's longest-running primetime drama.

NBC announced a history-making renewal today. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been picked up for a record-setting 21st season. While not a surprise given the show's continued solid performance, the news is especially noteworthy as the veteran procedural will now become American television's longest-running scripted live-action series.
The previous record was held by the original Law & Order, as well as 1950s western Gunsmoke, which both lasted 20 seasons. It is particulary interesting that Law & Order SVU, a spin-off series, was able to surpass the original. It goes to show the strength of the franchise, as it is extremely rare to have two shows within the same family to last as long as these two have.
Look for the Season 21 premiere of Law & Order: SVU this fall.
